This month, we are delighted to shine a spotlight on Specially Connected, a dedicated organisation working to create a more inclusive and understanding society for children with additional learning needs and their families. Their compassionate, hands-on approach is making a real difference to families across Northern Ireland — from personalised home visits to inclusive community events and specialised training.

In this Spotlight, Specially Connected share their story, their impact, and how NICVA membership supports their development.

1) Our Goals and How We’re Working Towards Them

At Specially Connected, our primary goal is to create a more inclusive and understanding society for children with additional learning needs and their families. We are passionate about ensuring that families feel supported, informed, and empowered at every stage of their journey.

To bring this vision to life, we have developed a number of key initiatives that directly support families, strengthen community connections, and promote greater awareness and understanding of children with additional learning needs.

1.1) Home Visits

Our home visits are a cornerstone of the personalised support we offer. By spending time with families in their own environment, we can gain a clearer understanding of each child’s unique strengths, challenges, and routines. This enables us to offer tailored strategies and practical support that work not only for the child but also for their parents or carers.

These visits foster trust, allow for open conversation, and provide meaningful, individualised guidance.

1.2) Family Fun Events

We recognise the importance of creating joyful, low-pressure opportunities for connection and learning. Our Family Fun Events are designed to be inclusive and engaging for all. While they offer space for children and families to relax and enjoy time together, they also serve as valuable learning platforms — where children develop key skills through play and parents gain ideas and inspiration for supporting learning at home.

These events help build community, promote interaction, and celebrate every child’s individuality.

1.3) Training Programmes

Alongside direct support and family-focused activities, we offer a range of training programmes for those who want to better understand and support our children. These sessions are flexible and responsive to the needs of each audience — from a general introduction to the world of SEN in schools to more in-depth knowledge about particular conditions.

Our training is open to parents, carers, educators, professionals, and career seekers, and is designed to build confidence, compassion, and practical understanding.

Through these combined efforts — home visits, family events, and tailored training — we are steadily working towards a future where every child with additional learning needs is recognised, supported, and given the opportunity to thrive.

2) A Success Story That Stands Out

We’ve been privileged to walk alongside many families on their journey — and every milestone, no matter how big or small, feels like a shared success.

One story that stands out involves a family we supported through our home visit programme. When we first met Michael and his family, they were feeling uncertain and in need of support that truly met their son’s individual needs.

By spending time in their home environment, we were able to get a clear picture of the specific challenges Michael was facing with communication. Rather than offering one-size-fits-all advice, we worked closely with the family to develop personalised, practical strategies — especially around the use of visual aids.

“Karen has been an absolute godsend to my son… Karen made visual aids for every aspect of communication that my son struggles with and these have been a massive help with Michael’s communication, resulting in him being much calmer and using more purposeful language to get his needs across.”

The impact was clear — not just in Michael’s ability to express himself, but in the overall sense of calm and connection at home.

“Karen provides support to your family based on what your child needs, as opposed to generalised advice that is often sent out in the post.”

Stories like Michael’s remind us why our home visits matter — because meeting families where they are, both physically and emotionally, leads to genuinely meaningful, personalised, and effective support.

3) Why We Joined NICVA

Our decision to join NICVA was driven by a shared belief in the power of collaboration, community, and advocacy within the voluntary and community sector.

We are passionate about creating lasting impact for children with additional learning needs and their families — but we also recognise that real, systemic change doesn’t happen in isolation.

NICVA provides an invaluable platform for connection, learning, and collective action. By becoming a member, we saw an opportunity to amplify our voice, strengthen our practice, and contribute to a wider movement working towards social inclusion and equality.

We were particularly drawn to the support NICVA offers in areas such as governance, funding, policy, and capacity building — all of which are essential as our organisation continues to grow.

Ultimately, our motivation to join NICVA comes from a desire to be part of something bigger — a community that champions the voluntary sector, stands up for those whose voices are often unheard, and works together to create positive, lasting change.

4) How NICVA Membership Has Benefited Us

Being part of NICVA has been really helpful for Specially Connected as we continue to grow and strengthen our work with families of children with additional learning needs.

One of the most valuable aspects of our membership has been access to informed guidance, helpful chats, and useful resources. Whether it’s navigating governance, developing funding strategies, or understanding changes in policy, NICVA provides the clarity and support we need to make informed decisions and operate confidently as a community organisation.

We’ve also benefitted from training opportunities and sector-specific information that help ensure our work remains sustainable, compliant, and impactful.

Equally important is the sense of connection NICVA fosters. Being part of a wider network of voluntary and community organisations allows us to share experiences, discover new perspectives, and explore collaborative opportunities that ultimately enhance the support we offer to families.

In short, NICVA membership has strengthened both our practical capacity and our sense of purpose. It’s empowering to know we have a supportive, expert-driven organisation behind us, championing the voluntary sector and helping us make a real, lasting difference.
