Lagan Currachs

Lagan Currachs

Lagan Currachs / Báidíní is a new club set up to build traditional wooden boats / currachs and row them on the Lagan, in the harbour, on Belfast Lough, Strangford Lough and coastal areas around Belfast with open rowing sessions weekly for members of the public to give it a go and see Belfast from a different perspective, for community groups, and tourists. We will have night time rows, sunset and sunrise rows, starling murmuration rows, picnics on the water etc. We hope to keep traditional skills alive and show people that these boats can be built by anyone, with any or no budget. We hope to get more people using the Lagan for boating and leisure especially those who have no experience of boating, and who may never have expected to have. As the Lagan is a neutral space in Belfast, we hope to use it as a way to pull divided communities together for rowing and Lagan beautification projects. We hope to plant wildflowers along the Lagan, with the help of Grow Wild, and make it more beautiful and ecologically diverse.
