Prison Arts Foundation

Prison Arts Foundation

The Prison Arts Foundation was founded as a charitable trust in November 1996 after extensive discussions between our main stakeholders the Northern Ireland Prison Service, the Probation Board for Northern Ireland, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, the Community Relations Council and the Community Arts Forum. Its aims are to create, both individually and in partnership, access to the arts for all prisoners, ex-prisoners, young offenders and ex-young offenders in Northern Ireland.

On average, over 20% of the prison population are enrolled in the various parts of the Prison Arts Foundation programme.

Services

Prison Arts Foundation is a charitable trust that seeks to provide access to the arts for those previously excluded or from marginalized communities.  It engages professional artists in a variety of disciplines to engage, teach, enthuse and give inspiration to people serving custodial sentences in the prisons of Northern Ireland from Juveniles to Adults.

  1. On-going residencies – one day per week over a year with an emphasis on a creative process whilst targeting and working towards a tangible result.
  2. Short residencies – these are designed and applied specifically to produce results through a creative arts process.
  3. Community Artists – this artistic residency works the same as any Community Artist programme whereby all interfaces within the “closed community” of prison and the outside community are considered.
  4. Visiting Artists – this form allows the on-going education programmes to be enriched and enhanced through contact with professional artists in all art forms visiting the prison.
