SAMARITANS, everyone is familiar with the name Samaritans, the Organisation has been providing emotional support since 1953 but, everyone does not know that:

• Samaritans was the first round the clock (every single day of the year) listening service set up in the UK and ROI • a total of 201 branches serve the UK and ROI

• we communicate with callers through their preferred medium – by phone, email, SMS, letter, face –to-face and through outreach initiatives in communities and prisons • 21,200 volunteers answer more than 5 million calls for help every year

• all volunteers are highly trained in the delivery of listening skills • a call for help is answered every 6 seconds

• we work in partnership with other key organisations

• we invest in research to inform public policy Samaritans’ vision is that fewer people die by suicide. Samaritans’ mission is to alleviate emotional distress and reduce the incidence of suicide-feelings and suicidal behaviour.
