Recruitment and retention are growing challenges for the community and voluntary sector. Rising costs, including increased National Insurance Contributions (NIC), are making it harder for organisations to invest in their workforce. However, apprenticeships offer a sustainable solution, one that can avoid employers National Insurance contributions while creating opportunities for skilled, committed employees.

Community and voluntary organisations often struggle to compete with the private sector on salary, yet they offer something invaluable: purpose. Research from Young Social Innovators found that when young people were asked what they saw as a sign of a successful life, the top answer was "Making a difference to your community/world", ranking above financial security and home ownership. This is an encouraging insight for organisations seeking passionate employees who want more than just a pay cheque.

Apprenticeships provide a cost-effective way to recruit and develop these motivated individuals. A degree-level apprentice costs significantly less to employ than a graduate, with potential savings of over £40,000 in direct employment costs over three years. Employers also benefit from zero NICs for apprentices, making them an even more attractive option in a sector where every penny counts.

Despite these advantages, uptake remains low. Many still associate apprenticeships with traditional trades, yet there are over 150 apprenticeship pathways covering areas such as business administration, finance, marketing, and social care - key roles within the community sector. However, it's important to note that apprenticeships are only an option for roles that are not directly funded by government, such as those based on project funding or unrestricted income.

Workplus is working to challenge outdated perceptions and make apprenticeships more accessible. If your organisation is looking for an affordable, sustainable way to build its workforce, now is the time to act. Visit workplus.app to get involved.

By embracing apprenticeships, community and voluntary organisations can tackle hiring challenges, reduce costs, and build a workforce driven by purpose and passion.
