NICVA delivers ILM qualifications at levels 3, 4, 5 and 7 to the Voluntary and Community Sector in NI for first line, middle and senior managers. We go back to learners several months later to find out the impact of their learning.

Michelle Bradley from The Parent Rooms successfully completed the ILM Level 4 Award in Leadership and Management in 2022. In this article we hear about her experience and how she has applied what she learned.

Why did you decide to do this course?

I am a new CEO, since October 2021, and wanted to consolidate my learning and gain a qualification. I wanted to gain skills to lead my staff team and the organisation.

How was your experience on the course?

I liked being able to talk to other managers and learn from them. There was very good peer support through discussion. The padlet was an excellent resource and Dawn was a good support.

What did you learn that has resulted in change in your practice?

I learnt about leadership styles and how that impacts on your staff and organisation. I now understand more about my own leadership style and how to lead my staff. I have started weekly one to ones with all members of my team. This is space for them to talk, help them feel valued and build trust and my relationship with them. It is an opportunity to address issues. We have a supportive culture with no blame. I learnt about the importance of open communication and encouraging feedback and challenge when necessary.

Do you have any development plans or needs?

I have applied for a Management Practice degree at Ulster University and also for ILM membership to continue my learning. My ILM level 4 was recognised as accredited prior learning. I am also part of the CFNI capacity building programme and have a mentor, so this will provide lots of opportunities for development in the next 18 months.

If you are interested in finding out more about the ILM Level 4 qualification you can contact Dawn or you can book your place on the next course on our website.
